In any tea-stall argument in my part of the world, that single line is enough: Louisville's night, case closed. No top-five match had ever been played at Lexington's Historic Memorial Coliseum before. According to Kentucky Athletics, the announced crowd was 6,045, the fifth-largest in program history. Louisville arrived on a ten-match win streak, ranked No. 3 (up from No. 5 two weeks earlier), after sweeping Western Kentucky 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 on 16 September. What Kentucky changed in the second set was not magic — it was trust on the serve-and-receive line. Hitting .420, 16 ties, seven lead changes, and finally 29-27 on a third set point. Thirty-five years of watching this game tells me 29-27 almost always means one thing: the side with options takes the long set.

The real story is not Brooklyn DeLeye's 22 kills. It is Kassie O'Brien's 59 assists. That number sits one short of her career best of 60, and it was the key to the match. DeLeye added 11 digs to her 22 kills on .269 hitting — her fifth double-double of the season — and sealed the match with her second service ace of the day. Middle blocker Morgan Gaerte added 20 kills, the first time this season Kentucky has put two hitters over 20 in the same match. Asia Thigpen chipped in 14 and Kennedy Washington 10, giving Kentucky four hitters in double figures. Molly Tuozzo led the defence with a season-high 21 digs, the fifth time in her career she has topped 20.

On the Louisville side one name glows: Chloe Chicoine, match-high 17 kills. WLKY reported she took four kills in the opening frame alone. For one set, the Cardinals looked untouchable.

Kentucky attacked from four directions; Louisville attacked from one. What the first set's .342 concealed was how narrow the Cardinals' outlet was. Kentucky's serve and defence pinched that path tighter over the next three sets, and the Wildcats' blocking unit no longer had to guess. 29-27, 25-21, 25-19 — three different margins, one identical cause.
