The Libero Nobody Counts: What Thirty Years of NCAA MOP Lists Hold Up to Bangladesh Volleyball

Last week I sat at my desk and read a list. A retrospective from NCAA.com, republished through Volleyballmag.com — 2026 to 2026, thirty tournaments, every Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Division I women's volleyball championship. Kerri Walsh at the top, 2026. Kyndal Stowers at the very bottom, 2026.

I put my tea down, and not because of Walsh.

Somewhere in the middle of that list sits a libero. A player in a different jersey, forbidden by rule from attacking, forbidden from blocking, a player who cannot win a point with her own hand — and she won the award for the best player of the tournament.

In thirty-three years of filing volleyball copy — from Dhaka, from Kathmandu, from the press box at Shaheed Noor Hossain National Volleyball Stadium — I have never once seen a defensive specialist's name come up at the post-tournament table in Bangladesh. We count spikes. We do not count the person whose pass made the spike possible. That is not a talent gap. It is an accounting gap.

The award has a structure, and you have to grip that first. The MOP is decided around the championship match, at the end of a single-elimination tournament. Which means a player whose team did not reach the final is not in the conversation at all. It is a team achievement wearing an individual medal. Across thirty tournaments there are at least thirty-two player-year recognitions, because two years produced shared awards — Lauren Cacciamani and Misty May in 2026, and Mikaela Foecke plus an unnamed co-winner in 2026. That is the first gap, and I will say it plainly: nobody can close that gap without going back to the original NCAA.com list.

Five names repeat — Cacciamani, Keao Burdine, Megan Hodge, Foecke and Kathryn Plummer. Four of them went back-to-back. The positional spread is wider still: outside hitter, middle blocker, setter, opposite, and libero.

Now look at our side. Our federation has no such list. We have Kathmandu 2026, and I have a folder at home where every federation excuse is kept with a date and a verbatim quote. I went to Kathmandu for bronze and found the ceiling above it. Today's subject is the accounting.

The first thing to understand: the MOP is not a player's award, it is an institution's award. Because it is tied to the final, the four back-to-back winners were all produced by programs that reached consecutive finals. The question is not "who was best", the question is "which program stayed stable enough to reach two straight finals". NCAA scholarships, multi-year coaching continuity and training infrastructure make that possible. We mistake that for pure talent, and that is our first error.

Second, the libero is the biggest lesson on the list, and it is the one we are wasting. A player in a position structurally excluded from scoring can be tournament-best — which means the system has learned to price defence. Serve-receive, floor defence and transition are valued heavily enough to outweigh a spike. In Bangladesh we measure volleyball by who scored how many. The receiver without whom the spike never existed has no number, no name, no following.

Third, the two shared awards are an honest obstacle. 2026 and 2026 prove the MOP is not a clean "single best player" metric. Anyone building an all-time ranking from this list is turning an accounting coincidence into history, and that is then sold to fans as fact.

Fourth, the pipeline comparison is the point. In the NCAA, pipeline means scholarships, youth clubs, four years of development, a coaching ladder. In Bangladesh, pipeline means jobs in the Army, Navy, Police, Ansars & VDP and PDB. Every medal is a payroll story before it is a sporting one. I am not saying this for the first time; I am saying it with dates attached: the day those jobs stop, our national team stops with it. When we reached the AVC Challenge Cup semifinal in Colombo in 2026 there was no professional league and no television money — that semifinal nobody believed in taught me belief has a locker-room smell. But it was a one-off, not a system. The 2026 U-23 Central Zone title proved the opposite lesson: hosting plus a long camp beats one month of firefighting.

Fifth, the NCAA list is a talent index, not a career guarantee. Kerri Walsh and Misty May came off this list and became the most recognisable beach volleyball pair on earth — but that story lives outside the list. In the same way, Kyndal Stowers is already being written up as the "next legend". The award is tournament-level recognition; to become a career measure it needs six or seven more seasons.

And let me be clear about the data limit. The retrospective has no attack efficiency, no dig rate, no perfect-pass percentage, no blocks per set. It is a recognition list, not a performance dataset. Any technical conclusion drawn from it is drawn wrongly, and I do not want to make that mistake myself.

So where could I be wrong?

First possibility: the concentration of repeat winners is not a model of stability but a symptom of inequality. A handful of programs swallow everyone else, and we read it as a development story. If the transfer portal and NIL erode that concentration, repeat winners should fall in the next decade, and the list will read less like a pipeline document and more like a snapshot of an unequal era.

Second, I may be over-reading the libero. One in thirty years is an exception, not a trend. Turning one into ten is an old habit of mine, and in front of a live microphone the rating usually plays louder than the fact. I went through my own folder: plenty of players who broke through once never came back — transfers, injuries, coaching changes.

Third, the NCAA and Bangladesh are not the same thing. Different money, different scale, different scholarship economy, different broadcast market. Empty stadiums, full microphone — commentating through that taught me that copying a form without copying the substance sounds like another imported jargon register, the very thing I dislike.

I will leave one testable prediction: if the 2026 MOP is another repeat winner, the era of concentration is still running; if it is an entirely new face, the dynasty programs are closing — and the list stops being history and starts being current reading.

And the demand on our side is not small. Let the volleyball federation publish a list. Every year the national team played, who held which position, from which district, on which employer's payroll. The day we can name our own libero is the day we stop keeping score wrongly. After Kathmandu I measured progress in scar tissue, not medals. This time I want to measure it in a list of names.
